James City County Supervision Records

James City County parole and probation records can show whether a person left confinement but remains under a court or corrections order. To verify James City County post-release supervision, first identify whether the case involves state parole, state probation, or a local court referral. Those paths belong to different agencies. A jail roster cannot answer the question after release, and a missing name does not prove that supervision ended. The best check joins an official corrections result, the sentencing court record, and confirmation from the office named in that record.

James City Parole Versus Probation

Parole and probation can both follow a James City County case, but they begin in different ways. Parole is conditional release from a prison term for a person who falls within a population eligible under Virginia law. The Virginia Parole Board decides whether to grant parole, while VADOC Community Corrections provides day-to-day supervision after release. Probation is imposed by a court. It may follow a suspended sentence, begin without a state-prison term, or continue after confinement ends. The court order, not the label a caller remembers, identifies the legal basis and length of supervision.

Virginia also has a local layer. Colonial Community Corrections serves qualifying defendants referred by a local court. It is not the Virginia Parole Board, and it is not a public name-search service. A person may therefore report to CCC while another person with a similar James City County case reports to VADOC District 34. The following comparison keeps the roles separate.

Supervision typeHow it beginsJames City County authority
ParoleA Board grant for a legally eligible personVirginia Parole Board decision; VADOC Community Corrections supervision
State probationA sentencing or revocation orderSentencing court and VADOC District 34
Local probationA qualifying court referralColonial Community Corrections
Parole
Conditional community release for a person within a parole-eligible group.
Probation
Court-ordered supervision in the community, often tied to a suspended sentence.
Discharge
The formal end of a custody or supervision term.
Absconder
A status based on an official allegation that a supervisee stopped reporting or cannot be located.

Verify James City Post-Release Supervision

The public first check for state supervision is the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. It covers more than people in prison. Results may include probationers, parolees, people in institutional hospitals, and some VADOC-responsible people held at local or regional jails. Search by the seven-digit DOC number when it is known. A name search is also available, but same-name results must be compared with the public identifiers, supervision category, and listed district.

The locator is updated daily, yet VADOC warns that information may be inaccurate or out of date. A missing result does not establish discharge. Court records and the responsible office provide the fallback. Use the following order to verify a James City County supervision record without confusing release from VPRJ with the end of a sentence.

  1. Search the VADOC locator by DOC number or name and review each possible match.
  2. Read the custody or community-supervision category and note any district office shown.
  3. Check the sentencing court record for probation, suspended time, later revocation orders, and the stated supervision term.
  4. Use the VADOC district directory to contact the office tied to the result for information it can lawfully confirm.
  5. If no public match remains, request the discharge or supervision record from VADOC or the sentencing court.

The Williamsburg/James City County General District Court handles misdemeanors and felony preliminary matters. Final felony orders generally come from James City County/Williamsburg Circuit Court. The full custody and court search sequence is also set out on the James City County released-inmate search.

The official local court page shows how James City County probation questions connect to the court record.

The court result supplies the order and case history, while the supervision agency confirms the current reporting relationship.

James City State Supervision Office

VADOC District 34 in Williamsburg serves James City County, Williamsburg, Poquoson, York, New Kent, and Charles City. It is the local state office for probationers and parolees assigned there. A locator result should be checked before calling because geography alone does not prove a person is assigned to District 34. Transfers, another sentencing locality, or a local CCC referral can lead to a different office.

The district can clarify public supervision information connected to an identified record. It does not replace a certified court order or a formal VADOC records response. For Board action, use the Virginia Parole Board, whose role is to decide parole for eligible people rather than manage routine reporting.

The Board's official site is the source for James City County parole decisions and meeting material.

Use Board material to establish the decision, then use VADOC for the active community-supervision record.

Note: A Board decision and a VADOC supervision assignment document different stages of the same eligible person's release path.

James City Supervision Violations

A supervision order may require reporting, compliance with court directions, program participation, or other person-specific terms. The official order controls. A claimed violation can lead to agency action, a warrant, or a revocation hearing, but an accusation is not the same as a final court finding. An absconder is a person whom the responsible agency officially alleges has stopped reporting or cannot be located. Never infer that status from a missed meeting, a stale locator result, or a rumor.

The VADOC locator is not a universal, real-time warrant database. Confirm a James City County warrant or revocation through the responsible court and supervision office. Virginia Jail VINE may report a later VPRJ custody event, but it is a custody-notification service rather than proof of every supervision violation. If the person returns to VPRJ, the current-inmate list can show listed custody at the time checked. It still does not state the final result of the violation case.

Important: A new jail entry, a supervision allegation, and a court revocation order are three different records. Match the dates and agencies before drawing a conclusion.

Note: A supervision office can confirm only information it is permitted to release, so a court order may remain the clearest public source.

James City Supervision Discharge Records

Release from confinement and discharge from supervision are separate events. A person can leave VPRJ, report to probation, and remain subject to a suspended sentence. A parolee may leave state confinement after a Board grant but still report to VADOC. Supervision ends when the governing authority records completion, discharge, termination, or another lawful change. The wording in the record matters because “released,” “paroled,” and “discharged” do not mean the same thing.

To prove that James City County probation ended, request the final order or discharge record from the court or agency that imposed and managed it. For VADOC supervision, identify the DOC number, district, and date range in a focused records request. A former locator result can help identify the office, but the public locator should not be treated as a permanent archive of every fully discharged Virginian. For local CCC supervision, the referring court record establishes the term and later action.

Notification records answer a different question. Virginia Jail VINE can report a custody event from VPRJ, while VADOC uses a separate state-prison notification process. Neither service is a complete supervision-discharge archive. A release alert may mark the start of probation or parole, not its end. Preserve the notice, then obtain the order or agency discharge record that states what supervision remained and when it closed.

Virginia largely abolished discretionary parole for felony offenses committed on or after January 1, 1995. Virginia Code § 53.1-151 still defines eligibility for legacy and exception groups. That divide explains why many modern release dates result from sentence computation, not a Board grant. Eligibility alone never proves release.

James City Local Probation Intake

Colonial Community Corrections provides a local rule that applies only when a court refers the person to CCC. Its official intake procedure directs the referred defendant to make contact within three working days of court action or release from confinement. The person must call 757-564-2311 to arrange intake. This deadline is not a statewide parole rule and does not apply to every person released from VPRJ.

CCC is located at 4093 Ironbound Road, Suite B, Williamsburg, and lists weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its intake page asks for court documents, two references, and photo identification if available. Assignment to a CCC probation officer takes place during the following week. Those details help a referred person start the correct process, but they do not create a public probation lookup. Verification still rests on the court order and any releasable agency record.

This distinction prevents a common local error. VADOC District 34 handles state probation and parole, while CCC handles eligible local referrals. Both have Williamsburg offices. The signed order determines which one controls.

Property After James City Release

Post-release supervision often begins while practical release tasks are still open. VPRJ's property policy says unclaimed inmate property is held for 30 days after release or transfer. After that period, uncollected items are destroyed. A former inmate or authorized designee should contact the jail promptly rather than assume a probation or parole office can retrieve the property.

VPRJ lists its Property contact through the jail contact directory at 757-820-3900 extension 5950. The rule applies after transfer as well as community release, which matters when someone moves from VPRJ to VADOC. It is a property deadline only. It does not shorten the retention period for the booking record, release summary, court order, or supervision file.

Identification may also be needed for CCC intake or property pickup. When photo identification is not available, contact the relevant office first and ask what alternate proof it accepts. Do not send personal documents to an office that does not hold the record or item.
