James City County Release Meaning
Most adults arrested by James City County Police or Williamsburg Police are held at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, commonly called VPRJ. The jail is run by a regional authority that serves James City County, Williamsburg, York County, and Poquoson. It is not a county sheriff-operated jail and it is not a Virginia Department of Corrections prison. That split determines who keeps each record. The sheriff identifies where local arrestees are held, VPRJ keeps the booking and release-processing file, police keep their arrest and incident records, and the courts keep orders and case dispositions.
A James City County release may mean a return to the community after bond, dismissal, time served, sentence completion, or another court order. It may also begin probation, parole, or local supervision. By contrast, transfer to VADOC, another jail, federal custody, or immigration custody ends the VPRJ stay but does not free the person. The current-inmate list can lose an entry in either situation. A data change can also cause a no-match. Can a person be released and still have a case? Yes. A bond release ends present jail custody, not the prosecution. The court docket remains the source for later hearings and the final result.

Virginia Code ยง 53.1-116 requires jail records about committed people and their confinement. The institutional file is not the same as a fully public online record. The ordinary Virginia FOIA framework calls for a response within five working days through production, a lawful withholding, an extension, or notice that the record could not be found or does not exist. Actual reasonable search, review, access, and duplication costs may apply. A public body need not create a new list if no such record exists.
Virginia Law on Release Records
Virginia FOIA starts with a presumption of access but includes exemptions. Section 2.2-3706 addresses law-enforcement criminal records and, on a proper request, specified adult arrest information and routine booking photographs subject to limits. Section 19.2-392 authorizes arrest photographs. Neither rule requires VPRJ to keep a released-person gallery online.
Public visibility is not retention. A name can leave JailTracker while the underlying record remains with VPRJ. Juvenile records are not publicly searchable through the state court system. Sealing or expungement can also restrict ordinary access when an order and current law apply. It should not be assumed that every old copy vanishes from every system.

James City Release Property Deadline
VPRJ publishes one short post-departure deadline that is easy to confuse with record retention. The jail holds unclaimed inmate property for 30 days after release or transfer. The former inmate or designee should ask what identification and permission the jail requires because the public FAQ does not state those steps.
This rule applies to property, not to a James City County booking or release file. It also applies after a transfer, which means a person can need property collected even while confined by another agency. The release disposition should still be obtained before treating the property deadline as proof of return to the community.
Find James City County Released Inmates
The best search begins with the custodian, not the place of arrest alone. An ordinary James City County arrest points to VPRJ. A state sentence or VADOC supervision calls for the state locator. Federal prosecution can point to BOP or USMS, while an immigration transfer calls for ICE. Each system answers a different question.

A state institution means custody continued after the VPRJ entry ended. A community-supervision result indicates confinement ended while a sentence component remains. When a discharged result is unavailable, VADOC records and the sentencing court are the proper fallback.
James City Release Court Names
Local court names appear in different orders. The felony court is James City County/Williamsburg Circuit Court. The district court is Williamsburg/James City County General District Court. General District Court holds misdemeanor results and felony preliminary events, while Circuit Court holds felony final orders and district-court appeals. Virginia Judiciary does not publish juvenile and domestic relations case information online.
A court disposition explains legal authority but is not the jail-door timestamp. Search OCIS by name, case number, or hearing date, then inspect each charge because one booking can contain different results. A certified final or sentencing order comes from the clerk. VPRJ's release entry remains the best record of when jail staff completed the physical departure and whether another custodian received the person.

Three James City Release Custodians
James City County does not operate the adult jail used for local arrests. The Williamsburg-James City County Sheriff's Office directs custody questions to the four-locality VPRJ authority. James City County Police keeps police arrest and incident records. VPRJ keeps booking, confinement, and release-processing records. The court clerk keeps the case and sentencing orders.
Send each request to the office that created or holds the record. The county FOIA portal is the route for county police material, not a substitute for VPRJ's own FOIA address. Court copies come from the matching clerk. Confirm the arresting agency and court because a VPRJ name search can also return a booking from Williamsburg, York County, or Poquoson.
James City Release Supervision
State probationers and parolees are supervised by VADOC Community Corrections, not by the Virginia Parole Board. The Board decides parole for eligible people. VADOC District 34 in Williamsburg serves James City County and nearby localities. Search the VADOC locator first, then use the district directory to contact the listed office. A missing public result does not by itself prove that supervision ended.
Colonial Community Corrections is a separate local layer for qualifying court-referred people. Its intake procedure says a referred person must contact CCC within three working days of court action or release and call 757-564-2311. The office is at 4093 Ironbound Road, Suite B, Williamsburg, with weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is a reporting instruction for a referred person, not a public lookup. Transit After James City Release
Williamsburg Area Transit Authority Route 11 lists stop 1332 on Merrimac Trail at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. That gives a concrete public-transit option after release. Riders should check the current Route 11 timetable because service can change. VPRJ does not publish a designated exit or family waiting area, so plans about where to meet should be confirmed with the jail rather than inferred from the bus stop.
Transportation does not prove release status. A family member seeing a name leave the roster should still confirm the disposition before traveling. A transfer to VADOC, another jail, or federal or immigration custody can remove the person from VPRJ without producing a community pickup.
James City Release Notifications
Virginia Jail VINE covers local and regional jails, including VPRJ. Search by name or identifier, choose the correct facility record, and register while the person is in custody when an alert is needed. VINE can report release or another custody change, but its event should be checked against VPRJ when the exact disposition matters. VADOC has a separate victim-notification process for state custody. A jail VINE registration should not be assumed to follow a transfer into that system.
BOP's locator applies only to federal Bureau of Prisons custody and can show release information for federal records from 1982 onward. USMS has no comparable historical locator, so federal court records and a USMS records request may be needed. The systems do not replace VPRJ records for a routine James City County booking.

ICE Transfers After James City Release
ICE's Online Detainee Locator includes people in current ICE custody and those released from ICE custody within the prior 60 days. James City County Release Facility
Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail is the sole public adult custodial facility identified as directly serving James City County. It holds pretrial detainees, locally sentenced people, and people awaiting transfer for four participating localities. Community departures include bond, time served, sentence completion, and court-ordered release. Custodial departures can go to VADOC, another jail, USMS, BOP, or ICE. The release summary should name which occurred.
No state prison, BOP prison, or ICE detention center is located in James City County. Those agencies remain important search channels when the VPRJ file points to a transfer. Courthouse holding under the sheriff is temporary court security and does not create a second released-inmate archive.
